چکیده
This paper reports experimental measurements of the radiation characteristics of green algae used for carbon dioxide fixation via photosynthesis. The generated biomass can be used to produce not only biofuels but also feed for animal and food supplements for human consumptions. Particular attention was paid to three widely used species namely Botryococcus braunii, Chlorella sp., and Chlorococcum littorale. Their extinction and absorption coefficients were obtained from normal–normal and normal–hemispherical transmittance measurements over the spectral range from 400 to 800nm. Moreover, a polar nephelometer was used to measure the scattering phase function of the microorganisms at 632.8 nm. It was observed that for all strains, scattering dominates over absorption. The magnitudes of the extinction and scattering crosssection are functions of the size, shape, and chlorophyll content of each strain in a nontrivial manner. Absorption peaks at 435, 475, and 676nm corresponding to chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b. The results can be used for scaling and optimization of CO2 fixation in ponds or photobioreactors as well as in the development of controlled ecological life support systems. & 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Utilization of Algal Consortium to Produce Biofuels and Byproducts For Reducing Pollution load
Algal biorefinery process utilizes every component of algal biomass to produce multiple useful fuel products. In this technique, acid pretreatment of algal biomass hydrolyzes microalgal carbohydrates into fermentable sugars, makes lipids more extractable and a protein part accessible for additional products. In the present study, Chlorella sorkiniana produced higher quantity of biodiesel than B...

This paper presents the spectral complex index of refraction of biofuel producing photosynthetic microalgae between 400 and 750 nm. They were retrieved from their experimentally measured average absorption and scattering cross-sections. The microalgae were treated as homogeneous polydisperse spheres with equivalent diameter such that their surface area was identical to that of their actual sphe...

BACKGROUND The colonial microalga Botryococcus braunii has been brought to people's attention for its conspicuous ability to accumulate a variety of lipids including hydrocarbons. B. braunii strains are classified into 3 races based on the types of hydrocarbons. A and B races are known to accumulate high level of lipids. However, their extreme slow growth rate has impeded its application for re...

The microalga Botryococcus braunii (B. braunii) can produce extracellular oil in the form of triterpenoid hydrocarbons up to 40 precent of their dry mass. These hydrocarbons with carbon chain lengths ranging from C30 to C40 including botryococcene, squalene and methylated squalenes, are ideal for the production of high quality liquid transport fuels and petrochemical alternatives. However, comm...
